In 2013, I had a secret “crush” on my friend, James. There were a million reasons to never tell him. After 6 months of keeping this secret to myself, I went to my mom for advice. She said “If that’s how you feel about him, then you won’t be able to keep a real friendship together. So you have nothing to lose by telling him.” I didn’t want to admit it, but I realized she was right. Feeling SO nervous, I invited James to meet up with my friends at a bar in Fishtown. I pulled him aside and told him how I felt. After an initial moment of shock, he smiled and said “I’ve always felt that way about you.” 10+ years later and I’m happily married to my best friend. Years ago, a guy invited my friend to the Chinese Lantern Festival for a first date. She and her date realized they didn’t have the same long-term goals, but she still had an amazing time.
